Focussing on efficiency, information and future practice, the ALAMA Spring Conference, OH 2012: Progress in Practice will deliver new thinking, evidence based strategies and up-to-date clinical information on topics relevant to all occupational health physicians involved with the emergency services and local authorities.

The three day programme includes:
• Cardiological problems relevant to Occupational Health
• Diagnosis of Epilepsy & Fitness for Work
• Type 1 Diabetes and Safety Critical Roles
• Pre-Employment Psychiatric Screening

There will be a significant emphasis on the theme of Attendance Management with:
• Professor Dame Carol Black presenting a review of the findings of her most recent report, Sickness Absence in the UK.
• The Chief Surgeon of the New York Police Department describing how NYPD delivers its Occupational Health Services.
• The presentation of recent research identifying how line managers' attitudes and behaviours influence attendance.

With the London Olympics only months away the conference programme will also feature several sessions on the preparations for the games including the OH challenge posed.

Keynote Speakers
Dr Eli Kleinman, Supervising Chief Surgeon for NYPD will give a first-hand account of the 9/11 World Trade Centre disaster, how over 34,000 NYPD responders were exposed at Ground Zero, how NYPD Medical Division arranged for treatment of all their WTC-related symptoms and their subsequent findings after a seven year follow-up.  Dr Eli Kleinman will also present an insight into NYPD's approach to overseeing the health, welfare and preparedness for 55,000 employees, determining suitability for training and fitness for duty, ensuring viability and maintaining the force at optimum strength.

Professor Dame Carol Black, National Director of Health and Work, will discuss the findings and recommendations of the independent review of "Sickness Absence" which was announced by the Prime Minister in February 2011. The review was established to identify ways to reduce absence and promote growth and has explored how the current "Sickness Absence" system could be changed to help people stay in work and reduce overall cost.

Professor Diana Kloss Barrister, Employment Judge and visiting professor at London's South Bank University will debate one of the fundamental, if not absolute, principles of medical practice - patient autonomy. In occupational health practice the main issue is the disclosure of confidential information without consent. Professor Kloss will examine legislation, case law and GMC guidance regarding the controversial question of whether disclosure of information without consent is ever justified to protect workers against themselves.

CPD and value for money
The faculty have awarded the conference programme 16 validated CPD points, split Wednesday 4.5, Thursday 8 and Friday 3.5. All efforts have been made to keep costs down to ensure delegates get excellent value for money. Conference fees have been maintained at 2011 levels.
